Here's a movie showing you how the spammers are getting all those people to line up and die preciesly so that they form the URL for a gold company...

As far as anyone can figure out, they created these gnomes using a bot, and then used a client-side teleport hack to put them in exactly the right place above the Ironforge floor. They also had to kill them somehow of course, but who knows how that was done. Did they send newly created gnomes out to the trolls in the lowbie area (because most starter mobs are actually neutral, so won't attack normally), and then wait until right as they died to teleport them away? If you went to the starting area while this was happening, would you see little gnomes disappearing? As I said: how extremely strange.

Here's a new gold site spamming technique - forming words with the bodies of fallen level 1 players!

Pretty desperate if you ask me - pics included.

We've all seen salesmen who would do anything to get a sale, it seems that the gold spammers in World of Warcraft have once again taken it one step further with a new marketing campaign: Falling Gnomes. These level 1 gnome warriors were plummeting to their deaths in Ironforge with their bodies spelling out the name of a site that peddles gold.

Now that they can't auto-send out hundreds of instant gold/power leveling spam whispers via their level 1 trial accounts, the in-game spammers have reverted back to their old tactics. WoW Insider recaps on what those tactics are in case you forgot.
In case you still don't know how to use the squelch/report spam function that was introduced in the 2.1 patch (unlikely given the amount of forum posts on the topic!) here is a page from the World of Warcraft European site that should explain things.
Blizzard announced that they are suing one of the heavily spamming gold sellers, Peons4hire. Peons4hire had recently been spamming players in World of Warcraft with multi-line messages advertising their power leveling and gold selling business. With the advent of the recently released 2.1.0 patch Blizzard made it easier to report and block these spammers. I've noticed a large decrease in spam while playing since the patch. It used to be that I would get nearly a dozen spams a night bu

Here's an important note from Drysc on using the new feature:

With the new spam reporting and preventative features available in the 2.1 patch (http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=102905050&sid=1) you can report a player for spam by simply right clicking on their name in-chat and selecting "Report Spam".

Please note that this option should only be used for reporting users who are spamming, and not for other types of harassment. Using the Report Spam option to do anything but report that player for spam can result in your report not being processed properly. If you wish to report other issues please use the normal reporting process.

Will the in-game spam stopping measures coming in the 2.1 patch work or will the spammers and gold farmers manage to get around them... They even look at Blizzard getting in on the gold selling game themselves, hopefully with enough low prices to drive all the spammers out.
With the upcoming Black Temple patch, we will be introducing new features aimed directly at reducing the amount of repetitive and unwanted whispers, chat text, and mail. Our goal with these new features is to not only increase the ease of reporting spam, but also to automatically restrict it. Following the implementation of these features, we will continue to monitor for chat and mail abuse and take further action as needed.

Here are some of the new spam-prevention features going into the new patch.

Reporting abilities:

With all the gold spam going around lately, one of the WoW Insider writers guilds created a guild spam drinking game, here's the rules.

  • After you get a spam tell, yell out the name of the spammer in Vent or guild chat. Everyone else who got the same spam at the same time takes a sip.
  • Take a sip if the spammer has no vowels in his or her name.
  • Take a drink if the spammer has ONLY vowels.
  • Take a sip if the spammer is a rare class/race combination, like dwarf rogue or troll mage.
  • Take a sip if you create a macro of your own and spam them back until they log off.
  • Take a drink if you send them obscene messages back.
  • Take two drinks if you manage to get all the swear words in the English language into one sentence.
  • Take a drink if you start talking about your personal life.
  • Take two drinks if you get them to respond to you.
  • Finish the bottle if they report you to Blizzard.

Hi all,

This is just a quick request pertaining to the methods used for reporting in-game advertisers / spammers.

We are extremely grateful for any help we receive from players regarding petitions about such spammers. However please keep in mind that in order to maximize the effectiveness of your petition it is important to submit it as soon as possible. Recently we have seen a tendency by players - especially those using custom user interface AddOns for reporting - to stockpile several reports and then open a ticket later with the details of all the spamming activity. Unfortunately by this time the spammer is likely to have finished the advertising and may have bothered many other players, which all might have been avoided if only the petition had been made sooner.
Buuuuurn... GM gets flamed after he ignored repeated in game tickets about Dark Shore "Under Attack" spam. Not that bad, but meh.

Blizzard representative and poster in the World of Warcraft forums Tseric recently commented on Blizzard tackling the gold selling spam that is coming in game alot of the time now...

We've been dealing with gold sellers, botters and hackers since before this game was ever released. It is an ongoing process, with each side always developing new tactics to outwit the other side.

Unfortunately, it does not appear there is a "magic bullet" that makes this all disappear. We continue to strongly address this particular area, as we always have.

We're in the works of developing more tools to address the problem of gold selling spammers and we expect to add more tools for our hacks team to use, as time goes on.

It is still an important part of the process for players to inform us of this type of action, so that we can document and build a case for removing account status from spammers.
